What Is Geofabric?
Geofabric — also known as geotextile fabric — is a permeable synthetic fabric, typically made from woven or non-woven polypropylene. It’s used across civil and construction applications to separate, filter, drain, protect or reinforce soil, and is one of the most versatile products on any construction or civil site.
Geofabric is generally classified by:
- Weight (grams per square metre) — heavier fabric offers greater strength and durability
- Construction type — woven fabric for higher tensile strength and reinforcement, non-woven fabric for filtration and separation
What Is Geofabric Used For?
Geofabric shows up in almost every stage of civil and residential construction:
- Sediment and erosion control, including silt fencing and sediment sock construction
- Separating soil layers in road base, driveway and pavement construction, preventing aggregate from mixing into the subgrade and compromising the structure
- Drainage applications, including wrapping ag-pipe and drainage trenches to let water through while keeping soil and fines out
- Weed suppression underneath gravel paths, driveways and garden beds
- Reinforcing soft or unstable ground before laying road base or hardstand areas, improving load-bearing capacity
