What Is Builders Plastic?
Builders plastic — also known as builders film or polythene sheeting — is heavy-duty polyethylene sheeting supplied in rolls. It’s typically rated by micron thickness (for example 100, 150 or 200 micron), with thicker grades offering greater durability and puncture resistance for more demanding applications.
It’s one of the simplest products on a job site, but also one of the most widely used — turning up at almost every stage of a build.
What Is Builders Plastic Used For?
- Vapour barriers under concrete slabs, preventing moisture from rising up through the slab
- Protecting floors, fixtures and materials during construction, renovation or fit-out work
- Temporary weatherproofing of roofs, walls and openings during construction
- Curing concrete, by retaining moisture in freshly poured concrete during the curing process
- General site protection from dust, weather, paint and spills
Because it’s low-cost and highly versatile, builders plastic is a staple product for builders, concreters, renovators and trades of all kinds — from slab preparation right through to final site clean-up.
Choosing the Right Thickness
Builders plastic is available in a range of micron thicknesses. Lighter grades are suited to general dust and weather protection, while heavier grades are better suited to under-slab vapour barrier applications or areas with higher foot traffic and wear during construction.
